Mississippi State University is serving the nation as Lead State for development of the National Catfish Information Database. The project is also sponsored by the Catfish Farmers of America (CFA), the Southern Regional Aquaculture Center and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service. The NCID will not be available for some months as it is still in planning.

California's sea urchin crop has risen to rank among California's most important fisheries. The dockside value of sea urchins surpassed all other fisheries from 1989 through 1995 and ran a close second to a record-breaking California market squid harvest in 1996. The export value of California's sea urchin fishery is estimated at more than $80 million a year. More than 75 percent of California's sea urchin catch is now exported to Japan.
