AltaVista, which means "a view from above," was inspired by the creation of big ideas from a team of experts with a fascination for keeping track of information. A new and better search engine, with fresher data: Millions of new web pages are added to the net each week. A search engine is little better than yesterday's newspaper if it can't keep up with all the new entries. AllTheWeb re-indexes the web every 9 to 11 days, as compared to every 28 days for Google.Fresher news: AllTheWeb updates over 3,000 news sources every two hours. Most major search sites get their news updates by combing through partner "feeds," or streams of content that are periodically updated by news and information partners. By contrast, AlltheWeb updates its news catalog all day long, at a rate of about 800 articles a minute.

There's a big problem with most search engines--including the popular ones most of us use every day. Huge portions of the Internet are completely invisible to them. This "invisible Web" consists of information living in thousands of online databases.Web search engines use creatures (actually, programs) called spiders to roam the Web and record what they find. If information is in a Web page, these creatures work pretty well, and you see the results on services like Yahoo, Google, and AltaVista. But spiders can't index databases. And so most searches just scratch the surface of what's really out there--an invisible Web estimated to be as much as 500 times larger than what search engines can see.
The Intelliseek people have created a new site that allows users to search more than 1,000 information sources, as well as those on the invisible Web. The service is called ProFusion.

A better question would be something like, "Where can I buy live fish?".

Google Groups is a site on the Web where you can read, search, participate in and subscribe to more than 50,000 newsgroups and over 800-million posts. An incredibly useful resource for getting information in a hurry and finding people with similar interests, also the only site to archive and search more than twenty-years of newsgroup postings.Internet discussion groups, "Newsgroups", are a powerful and fun way to communicate with people around the world who are interested in the same things as you.
Discussion groups are so invaluable because they are the only medium that allows disparate groups of people with like interests to communicate on a world-wide scale. Any person in the discussion group can send a message to the entire group, and any of the other members can immediately respond to the entire group, too.
Like groups in daily life, each discussion group has its own purpose, culture and rules of behavior. These characteristics are typically enforced by the group's members. Before contributing to a group, it's advisable to listen in, "Lurk", for a while. Each group also periodically publishes a description of its charter and rules, "FAQ-Frequently Asked Questions", which you should read before participating.
Entering a newsgroup is much like entering someone's living room where a meeting is being conducted. It's generally considered bad manners, on your first visit, to start shooting your mouth off. Listen for a few days, get a feel for the others, then gently introduce yourself before you start telling/showing the others why you are an idiot. If you don't you will learn the true meaning of Flame Mail :-)
