Information from the U. S. Government is appearing with increasing frequency on the Internet. In many cases the Internet is the only place to locate important government information. Virtually all agencies now maintain their own web pages, on which are linked statistical data, news releases and other full-text publications. As time passes, more data will be in online format rather than standard print sources. In the future, searching the Web will become the primary means of locating government data. This "hands-on" workshop is designed to demonstrate how to maximize retrieval of federal government information on the Web.

Acting under the directive of the leadership of the 104th Congress to make Federal legislative information freely available to the Internet public, a Library of Congress team brought the THOMAS World Wide Web system online in January 1995, at the inception of the 104th Congress.

The Electronic Document Release Center is provided as a public service by the Central Intelligence Agency and its Office of Information Management. This site provides basic guidance to assist members of the public in exercising their rights and is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of the complex issues associated with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Electronic FOIA Amendments of 1996 (E-FOIA), the Privacy Act (PA), and Executive Order 12958 (EO). We have provided, however, the complete text of these laws as links in the relevant sections for the public's convenience.

The Government Printing Office (GPO) prints, binds, and distributes the publications of the Congress as well as the executive departments and establishments of the Federal Government. Distribution is being accomplished on an increasing basis via various electronic media in accordance with Public Law 103-40, "The Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access Enhancement Act of 1993.''
