Lotteries

They say, "You have a better chance of being hit by lightning than wining the lottery." The fallacy of this argument is: "Who in their right mind would pay a buck for a chance to get hit by lightning?" Except maybe golfers.

Calculating odds of winning:
F!/(P!*(F-P)!) divided by (/) P!/(M!*(P-M)!) times (F-P)!/((P-M)!*((F-P)-P-M)!)

F= the field of numbers (e.g. 50)
P= the number of player picks (e.g. 6)
M=the number of player matches(e.g. 5)
For the mathematically challenged, most state and national lotteries have from about 1 in 5 million to about 1 in 80 million odds of winning.

Say your state lottery has 1 in 10-million odds; If you buy two tickets, you have a 1 in 5-million chance of winning. Ten tickets gets you a 1 in 1-million chance, and if you buy five-million tickets you have a 50/50 chance. To insure your win, you need to buy 10-million tickets, which will pay you about half of what you've spent. By the way, all lottery draws are purely random. There is NO way to improve your odds, other than buying more tickets.

All US State lotteries as well as most international lotteries can be found below. I may have missed some. Please let me know of any state or international lotteries that I may have missed. Webmaster.

Oregon Lottery
The idea of lotteries isn't a new one. Thoughout history, lotteries have had profound effects on many good causes. Lotteries first came to the United States in 1612 with the proud Virginia Lottery, which funded half of Jamestown's budget. Lottery funds were used to fight the adversities of early Virginia, such as disease, fire, and famine. Early U.S. lotteries helped fund the Colonial Army in the Revolutionary War, gallantly fighting for independence from the British, by providing arms and uniforms. After the war, these dollars paid to repair much of the damage left behind. Our founding fathers, Washington and Jefferson, depended on lotteries to fund the early development of our nation. Many churches and early universities, such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth, were funded in part by lotteries.

In late 1930, the newly elected State Government, led by Jack Lang, decided the only course of action to solve the critical funding situation in the States Hospitals was to start a State Lottery. UK National Lottery (England)
UK National Lottery (England)
The UK's first National Lottery was actually way back in 1569 would you believe, but it eventually died out, only to be resurrected as an annual event between c. 1750 and 1826. Ever since then, it's not been possible to buy a National Lottery ticket here in the UK until the launch of the current UK National Lottery on Monday 14th November 1994. Why ? Well, I blame the soccer pools companies for putting pressure to preserve their status as the only way of winning more than a million pounds in this country. It's total madness that we were denied a National Lottery in the UK for 168 years because of this - even Albania has got one !
