Housed within the walls of the Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium is a collage of 650 interactive exhibits in the areas of science, art, and human perception. The Exploratorium stands in the vanguard of the movement of the "museum as educational center." It provides access to, and information about, science, nature, art and technology.This unique museum was founded in 1969 by noted physicist and educator Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, who devoted his efforts to it -- and was its director -- until his death in 1985. Dr. Goery Delacote, a renowned French scientist, science educator and public servant, was named executive director of the Exploratorium in February 1991.
The Smithsonian is an independent trust instrumentality of the United States holding some 140 million artifacts and specimens in its trust for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." The Institution is also a center for research dedicated to public education, national service, and scholarship in the arts, sciences, and history. Centered on the National Mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian receives financial support through federal appropriations and private funds derived from investments, grants, and contracts, gifts, sales, and other revenue.
The web site for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was among the first wave of web sites to spring up in 1993. It began as a volunteer effort by Jim Angus who managed the museum's DNA research laboratory at the time.
