Responsibility & Hoplophobia

Some folks believe that firearms are just simply evil. If you are one of these people, I would like to ask your help in understanding that position.

As you formulate your response, please keep in mind, I fully understand that a firearm can be used in such a way as to cause injury, or death, to innocent people. But I also know that firearms are used, by amateurs, somewhere around a million times each year to save innocent lives. ( See this link)

Firearms, like many other powerful hand tools, are not for everyone. Many people are klutzes, and should stay away from tools in general. There are some that just never learned they should not run with scissors. There are a tiny few that should never have matches, for they can't control their urges, and pose a danger to anything flammable. But that should not preclude the rest of us from the utility of instant fire.

For those that are uneasy around firearms, (much like learning to swim might save your life, or that of a loved one), I highly recommend a little professional handgun exposure. Contact your local police department or visit this site, and seek a well-lighted place for guns. An afternoon at the range, with a little professional guidance, can be a very enjoyable experience.

If you believe that you can't be trusted with a potentially dangerous device, please Click Here and let me know why you believe you are so unworthy of my trust.

Hoplophobia:

The term "Hoplophobia" was coined by Jeff Cooper. Hoplophobes will not recognise the name, but would do well to learn a little about Mr. Cooper.

Jeff Cooper wrote:

"I coined the term "hoplophobia" in 1962 in response to a perceived need for a word to describe a mental aberration consisting of an unreasoning terror of gadgetry, specifically, weapons. The most common manifestation of hoplophobia is the idea that instruments possess a will of their own, apart from that of their user. This is not a reasoned position, but when you point this out to a hoplophobe he is not impressed because his is in unreasonable position. To convince a man that he is not making sense is not to change his viewpoint but rather to make an enemy."

"Hoplophobia is after all a true phobia, which means that it is not susceptible to reasoned argument." -Jeff

"A man who loves weapons is no more abnormal than a woman who loves babies. Countless millennia of hunting and war fighting have programmed man with the knowledge that a weapon means LIFE. This stark realization repels some - they are the hoplophobes."
-Paul Kirchner
