Contrary to the opinion of some, firearms have many legitimate and legal uses. I, for one, truly appreciate the beauty of the instrument. A well-designed and precision-crafted firearm is a work of art. Few other manmade devices can boast a hundred years or more of useful life.
The form, fit, and function of most firearms attest to their near-perfect design and construction. In a day when we are accustomed to discarding and replacing our machines, (Automobiles, appliances, and even buildings), without a second thought, owning a well crafted, precision instrument “GUN” gives many a sense of permanence. Having an instrument, that with a minimum of care, will outlive ourselves and even our grandchildren, is to many of us no different than having a fine work of art.
Beauty and craftsmanship aside, firearms offer many other benefits. Recreation, utility, and self-protection, to name just a few.
From the age of 5 or 6 most boys, and some girls, find it nearly impossible to resist the urge to throw stones. Folks have been throwing stones for countless millennia. As we mature in mind and body many of us chouse to prefect our skills. From hand thrown rocks, spears, slings, and the like to the most accurate of all, a modern firearm, we strive to achieve perfection in our throwing.
There is no better utility for a farmer, rancher or country person than a gun. A gun offers the rancher the most humane way to end the suffering of a sick or injured animal, and to protect his flock from predators. The utility of a gun has feed us, or our forbearers, for the last few hundred years.
A 160-pound man on drugs, or in bad need of some, can kill you or your child, with his bare hands in a matter of seconds. A three-pound gun, in the hands of any average citizen, can and does stop these animals in their tracks, something around a million times a year.
Just a few years ago the above statements would seem absurdly obvious, but in these strange times where a simple machine is vilified and those who misuse them are considered innocent dupes of the machine it's self, and sequestered away in a warm comfortable place, instead of being treated as the rabid animal that they are, I feel I have to justify my interest in a legal and morally-neutral object. (Heavy Sigh)
