1. Every firearm is loaded.
Always! There are no exceptions to this! Even if you have just unloaded your firearm, treat it as if it was still loaded. Do not believe anyone that says their gun is unloaded. Don't trust your friend, you brother, or the Pope! All guns are ALWAYS loaded!
2. Never point the muzzle
of a firearm at anything
you are not willing
to destroy! If you are not willing to see a bullet hole in it, do not allow a firearm's muzzle to point at it. This includes things like your foot, the TV, the refrigerator, the dog, or anything else that would cause general upset if a hole appeared in it. Don't swing or move the weapon in such a way to, even momentarly, expose someone to the muzzle.
3. Keep your finger off the
trigger until your sights
are on the target.Danger abounds if you keep your finger on the trigger when you are not about to shoot. Speed is not gained by prematurely placing your finger on the trigger as bringing a firearm to bear on a target takes more time than it takes to move your finger to the trigger. Touch the trigger and expect damage!
4. Be sure of your target
and what's behind it.Never shoot at sounds or a target you cannot positively identify. Know what is in line with the target and what is behind it (bullets are designed to go through things). Be aware of your surroundings whether on a range, in the woods, or in a potentially lethal conflict. Take out a bad guy, but also kill a good guy, and you'll fry!
5. Never accept a firearm
from another, unless
you know its clear! How do you know that a particular weapon is clear? Remove the magazine then open the action. Look and feel. Look into the breach, then stick your finger in the breach and feel that it is empty.Once a cleared gun has left your hand, even if for only a second, clear it again! If you set it down, or hand it to another, ALWAYS clear it when you pick it back up.
6. Never hand a firearm to
another, unless its clear
and the action is open!Always open the action and clear any firearm you are about to hand to another person.

NRA Gun Safety
If you own a gun and do not know how to operate it, do not experiment with it. Point it in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and store it securely. Seek competent assistance and instruction at once. An untrained adult can be as dangerous as a curious child.
