The International Pin Shooting Association was formed by interested shooters from clubs involved in the sport of shooting regulation bowling pins.
Bowling pin shooting is a great way to start enjoying the world of competition shooting. Many gun ranges and clubs around the country shoot this type of match; and it can be anything from an informal friend-among-friends night, or as serious as a national championship. Richard Davis, the man who started the Second Chance Armor Company, which makes bulletproof vests, started the sport in the mid-seventies. Second Chance still holds a national championship pin shoot, attended by well-known gun celebrities and every day people alike.
In October we offer the Bowling Pin Championships. Ever tried Pin Shooting? A bowling pin is the most aggravating handgun target there is in the entire world. The game is simple: Five (5) standard bowling pins are placed in a row across the front of a six-foot wide, four-foot deep table. The firing line is twenty-five (25) feet away. Practically powder burn range! All the competitor has to do is knock the five pins off the table, using as many as six shots, as rapidly as possible. A piece of cake, right? There is a little know fact about bowling pins: they have tiny retractable claws, which extend when they are about to fall off of anything, especially a table! They can teeter on the edge, needing only a breath of air to send them to the ground. but absent that breath, they will hang there. Under the rules of the game, you could have just as well missed that pin altogether! If its on the table, it counts against you! I told you it was an aggravating game!
In 1994, Pistolsmith, Richard Heinie, and USPSA Illinois Section Coordinator, Russell Cluver, were discussing the amount of grumbling going on about guns and equipment in general. After quite a lot of discussion, they came up with the idea of a match that would use only 1911 Single Stack Pistols.
IHMSA short for ( International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association ) is the name of the governing body for long range handgun silhouette shooting. IHMSA sets all of the rules for this sport, it also publishes the official news paper ( IHMSA News ) of the organization. One of its other aspects is to put on the biggest handgun shooting match in the world, The Internationals hosted by IHMSA, shooters from all over the world complete in this Match.
