The EpicenterHomemade 12-Volt generator: A superb design for a low-cost generator. A few notes: I would not mount the battery on the same platform as the engine (Vibration can damage the battery). I would suggest having two or more extra engines and alternators on hand (Small gas engines are not designed for continuous operation). Have extra belts and sparkplugs on hand.

You could use one as a back-up generator for cloudy days without wind or as a sole power source. In warm locations though, you may not want to produce this much heat on hot summer days. In cold places and during the winter, you can use the extra heat for hot water and for space heating.
