Web Page Development

We build custom and semi-custom web pages for both home and business users. One of our semi-custom web pages maybe your choice if you need a personal, family or small business page. Businesses that want to make a large and impressive presents on the web may want to talk to us about our "Built to Your Specifications" custom system of pages. The following hints may help you to produce a better web site.

The 10 Most Common
Webpage Mistakes

Web pages are created to "sell" a product, service, or idea. To do this a web page must attract visitors, keep them at the page long enough to make the sale or get the idea across, clearly promote the topic of the page in an easy to read and understandable way, and ask for the sale.

A web page is much like a magazine add or TV commercial. With the proper application of pleasing colors, graphics, text, layout, and promotion, a well-crafted web page can do wonders for you. On the other hand, a poorly done web page will actually drive visitors away. The following are the ten most common web page errors:

  • Too slow to load. Many web pages are too large or contain large, slow to load, graphics. If a web page takes more then about 30 seconds to load most people will loose interest and surf on. They never hang around long enough to see your wonderful creation.

  • Too much animation, sounds and other gimmicks. Many pages are way too busy. They are a mess of flashing, winking, rotating, graphics and weird sounds or music. They look like a circus. This is OK if you are in fact a circus, but for most, it detracts from the main purpose of the web page.

  • Dark background and mismatched colors. Dark or busy backgrounds can make the text hard to read. You may see the colors properly on your monitor, but another's video may display the background much darker. A web page developer must check his creation on multiple computers to insure it looks good on all. Mismatched colors may grate on some visitor's nerves. Remember, you are creating a web page for your visitors, not you.

  • Wrong fonts and sizes. Some font styles and sizes are inappropriate for web pages. For instance, Old English, when used sparingly and large enough can be pleasing, but too much or too small makes for a hard to read page. If the page is hard to read your visitors will leave.

  • Too crowded, confusing layout. Keep your layout simple and easy to follow. Don't try to do too much on one page. Make several simple pages behind the first page.

  • Inconsistant pages. All your pages should have a common look and feel. Having wildly different colors, layouts, fonts, etc from one page to the next will look like a hodgepodge. Keep a common logo, layout and look and feel on all your pages.

  • No Give-Backs, no reason for a revisit. Commonly called "Give-Backs", this allows you to show your expertise and give back something of value to your visitors. Your visitors are much more likely to save and revisit your web site if you offer them some valuable information or links. For instance, if you are selling real estate, have an area where you offer your visitors hints on how to make your home subconsciously more attractive, like the smell of baking bread, etc. Think about a news section that is kept current with news and topics of interest to your potential customers. These kinds of features promote revisits. This page is one of my give-backs. See my Support Pages and Free Virus Checker for other examples of our give-backs.

  • Unclear subject matter. Make sure your web page is very clear about the subject matter. Many pages require a substantial amount of reading before a visitor fully understands what the main topic of the page is all about. If they don't know what your are selling, they won't buy it!

  • Lack of Meta-Tags. Meta-Tags are invisible words and phrases, imbedded in your pages, that tell search engines how to index your page so it can more easily be found. With the proper application of meta-tags your web page may come up in the first few returns of a search engine. Having your web page listed as the ten thousandth one in a search engine will get you no visitors, having your page in the top five or ten can get you lots of visitors.

  • Other technical errors. There are many other technical errors done by most web page creators. We at J.R. Whipple & Associates , have been creating web pages for many years. We can help you create and promote your pages. Please see below for more about our services and fees.

    Doing it Right

Here are a few well researched facts and things to do, to make your page something that your visitors will stay with long enough to get your message:
  • A session of online reading averaged out at 34 minutes.

  • 64% of photos were looked at on average one-and-a-quarter second.

  • highlight your keywords.

  • Indented bulleted lists.

  • One Idea per paragraph (users will skip over any additional ideas if they are not caught by the first few words in the paragraph)

  • Keep the word count small. Long paragraphs will be skipped over.

  • J.R.'s Custom Webpage Development

Our custom web page development is done in phases, as follows:

    Phase 1:

We will either, meet with you in person, or teleconference with you for about one hour. During this time we will discuss your needs and requirements. You should have available any company logos, letterhead, industry awards, photographs, company text, product descriptions and other sources of "content" that may be used to give your web page coherence and quality content. We will verbally outline an approach to fulfill your needs and present you with a rough quote of time and cost. This we do at no charge to you, unless travel and per diem costs are involved.

    Phase 2:

Should you decide to continue on a retainer of 20% of the total amount will start the design and development process. Due to other commitments and responsibilities the calendar time will be longer than the actual billable development time for the project.

    Phase 3:

At this time we will have the structure of the web page system defined and we will display to you, all the major screens that will make up your web site. Your suggestions about the screens and flow are encouraged. A payment of 20% of the total amount will be expected.

    Phase 4:

Delivery and installation of the first version of working pages on your server or ISP "Internet Server Provider". All major pages and functions will be implemented. Some lesser pages or functions may not be fully functional. No, or limited, visiter feedback forms will be functional at this time. You will be encouraged to start using the web site so you can better see how it works, detect any "Bugs" or typos, and suggest changes. A payment of 20% will be expected.
(Major changes or deviations from the original plan may require substantially more work on our part, which may necessitate re-negotiation of the payment schedule.)

    Phase 5:

Delivery and installation of the second version of your working pages on your server or ISP. All pages and functions will be fully functional at this time. We expect you to continue to use the pages and give us feedback. A payment of 20% of the total amount will be expected.

    Phase 6:

Delivery and installation of your complete and fully functional web site. All pages and functions fully functional as well as all user feedback forms will be operational. The final 20% payment will be expected at this time.

    Optional Webpage
    Marketing Phase

You may want to market your web page yourself, if so we offer a "How to market your web page" document that informs you about many ways to get your page visited. If you would prefer that we market your page for you, we offer several marketing packages, keyed to your budget and needs.

    Notes:

For smaller custom projects we usually combine phases 3 & 4 and phases 5 & 6. Then the payments are three equal payments of 33.3% of the total amount.

For a period of 90 days from the delivery of the complete working web system ( Phase 6 ) we will, at no additional charge to you, fix any errors ( Bugs ) that were inadvertently left in the system or uncovered by you or your users.

Any additions or enhancements to your custom pages, that you require, at any time in the future will be discussed with you at no charge.

Simple changes will be quoted and charged as 50% up front and the balance on delivery of the revised pages.

If the additions or enhancements require extensive modifications or rewrites to the existing system, we will repeat the above phases and payment schedule.

We offer a fee based, on going web page site administration package for those that require dynamic pages, i,e, continuous page updates such as: specials of the week, price changes, discount coupons, employee of the week, etc.

If you would like to schedule a meeting to discus your web page requirements, please call (530) 824-1400, or E-Mail Us
