Computer Fax

How to Send and Receive Faxes

Sending and receiving faxes from your computer is a fairly straight-forward processes. If your computer is equipped with a fax-modem and the appropriate software, (most are), you can send and receive faxes.

Sending a Fax is as easy as printing a page to your printer. From any program that can print you can send a fax. Open the document you wish to fax, (In the example we'll use our word processor), then go-through most of the same steps that you would to print it.

Sending a Fax

1 When you are ready to send your document as a fax, click on the word File.

2 Click the Print choice.

3 Click the small down-arrow to the right of your printer.

4 Select your fax device, by clicking once on it, (Your fax devices name may be deferent).

5 Then click the OK button in ther lower right of the print window.

6 Type in the recipient's fax number.

7 Click on the Send Fax button.

That's all there is to it! After your fax has been sent, you'll want to close the fax box, else the fax program will remain in the receive mode and any incoming calls will be received as an incoming fax.

Receiving Faxes

Receiving faxes, through your computer, is usually easy but due to the differences between fax software, there are a lot of variations from one computer to another. The following is a general description that should get you close:

  • From your Start Button find your faxing program, (Note: It may be called something like Pro-Fax, Bit-Com, RapidComm, or other equally non-descriptive name.)

  • After you start the program, you should see a small window. Click on one of the top words, such as: Setup, Configure, etc. Then set the number of rings before answer, and other preferences.

  • During the time that the small fax window is open, on your screen, your Fax/Modem will automatically answer the phone after the proscribed number of rings, and receive the incoming fax.

  • After you receive a fax, the fax program will display a message on the order of: You Have “N” number of new faxes. It will offer several choices to either view, print, or delete the fax.

  • If you only have one phone line that you use for both the Internet and your voice phone calls, and leave the fax program running when someone calls you, your computer will answer and the calling party will hear a beeping. You will need to close the faxing program in order to receive voice telephone calls.

  • During the time that you are connected to the Internet, like now, your fax software will be unable to receive any faxes. (The sending party will get a busy signal)

  • Some faxing programs, while running and waiting for a fax, will inhibit you from connecting to the Internet. (Close your fax program before attempting to get online).

  • Faxing Without A Phone Line

If you have DSL, a Cable-Modem, or other non-phone-line based connection to the Internet, and assuming your computer has no dialup modem, you can still send and receive faxes.
