Virus Warning

KLEZ.H

In our ongoing fight against computer bugs, and to help keep our customers, associates, and friend's computers free from viruses, we are sending this warning.

We generally don't warn about every computer virus that comes along. After all, hundreds of new viruses and computer worms are released each month. Many computer viruses are not destructive of files and programs on the infected computer, they just use your computer to send copies of themselves to others on your email list. Once in a while an especially nasty virus or computer worm comes out that can cause much damage to infected machines. This new virus is such a creature, and we feel it is dangerous enough to send this warning.

A new, and destructive, virus called "Klez.H" or "WORM_KLEZ.H" is making the rounds. This virus is delivered by your email.

It is imperative that you have a current, up to date, virus checker. If you do not have a good anti-virus program installed on your computer, and it is not up to the latest version, your computer could get attacked by this destructive bug. If your virus checker is not up to date, this new virus could infect your computer.

Special Notice

Click the above If you currently have ANY anti-virus program installed on your computer.

Please read this entire page, before you start your scan!

You can check your computer for this, as well as other viruses, by clicking the following link:

Click the above graphic and follow the instructions. You can read more about this new virus by clicking the WORM_KLEZ.H link in the "Virus Alerts" panel in the upper right of this page.

Remember, the above virus test will not keep you free from future attacks. It only checks the current condition of your computer. To keep your computer safe from future viruses you must have a resident anti-virus program installed on your machine.

When running the above virus checker, be sure you click the drives you wish to scan, (Before you click the scan button), or your computer will NOT be tested for viruses.

- CAUTION -

If you have never had a virus checker installed in your computer, or the Anti-Virus program which was in your computer has never been updated, there is a good chance that one or more viruses have already infected your computer and you don't know it!

Many computer viruses infect critical files that make up Windows. If an Anti-Virus program removes these infected files, your computer may fail to boot up the next time it is started, and you may need to reinstall Windows and/or other programs.

You're dammed if you do, and dammed if your don't! If you don't have an Anti-Virus program in your computer, you will eventually get infected, which may stop your computer from functioning… If an Anti-Virus program checks your computer and detects and removes infected files, that are critical to the computer's operation, this too may stop your computer from working right.

There is no easy way around this! All computers, that have Internet access, must have a good Anti-Virus program installed. Very few computers will be so infected that the Anti-Virus program will cause problems, but a few will. Backup all your critical data to floppies, or other removable media, then check your machine for viruses. Once your computer has been cleared of all viruses, do a normal power-down restart, and insure it starts up properly. In the rare case that your computer was so infected that it will no longer start properly, you may need to resort to your "Recovery CD" or completely clean and reload your hard drive: SEE THIS. If you have to resort to the recovery CD or to reloading Windows, after your computer is back up and running, you must then scan your backup media for viruses, or they could re-infect your computer.

PC-Cillin

We recommend the anti-virus program called PC-Cillin 2002 by Trend Micro. If you don't already have this anti-virus program installed on your computer, you can download a free 30-day trial version of PC-Cillin here:

Download PC-Cillin

If you already have PC-Cillin installed on your computer, you need to insure that it is updated to the latest version of pattern files, so it can detect and block this new virus. When properly installed and configured, PC-Cillin should automatically update its files, but this new virus is so dangerous we recommend you verify its operation by doing the following:

Double click the little blue & white icon near your clock, in the lower right of your screen.

If the pattern file is 289 or greater all is well, and you should be protected from this new virus.
(If you have PC-Cillin 2002, click the "About" selection to see the pattern number.)

If the pattern file is less than 289, do the following:

  • Leave the PC-Cillin window open.
  • Open your web browser, so you are connected to the Internet.
  • Back in the PC-Cillin window, click the large MAIN button, (For PC-Cillin 2000), or click "Update Now" if you have PC-Cillin 2002.
  • When the program opens, click the Update button.
  • Click the Update Now icon, then click the Next button.

  • If you do not have PC-Cillin installed on your computer, but do have another anti-virus program, I strongly suggest you check with that program's main web site or their technical support, to insure the version you currently have will detect this new virus.

  • Double-Click the small icon near the clock.

  • Click the "Settings" button.

  • Click "Virus Scan".

  • Click "Internet Mail Scan".

  • Click the down arrow and select "Delete".

  • Click the "Apply" button, and close all windows.
  • That's it!   PC-Cillin 2002 is now configured properly.

    A Virus was Detected

Eventually you WILL receive at least one virus in your email. When you do, assuming you have your virus detector setup properly, you will see a message similar to the following:

Notice that the action when virus found, states the file was not cleanable, so the virus was deleted. Had this stated “The file was passed”, your anti-virus program is not set properly, and you could get infected. See the above to set your PC-Cillin anti-virus program to delete these nasty little bugs.

If the file was deleted, fear not. Just close the massage box and return to what your were doing. This virus was blocked from infecting your computer and will cause you no further problems.
